Kenya Visa, eTA and Airport Arrival: What First-Timers Get Wrong

I meet guests at JKIA who almost missed their flight over eTA confusion, or who arrive with the wrong paperwork entirely. Here's the arrival process explained properly, plus the mistakes I see over and over from first-time visitors to Kenya.

Kenya switched from visa-on-arrival to an electronic travel authorization (eTA) system a while back, and I still meet guests at Jomo Kenyatta International Airport who did it wrong, or worse, didn’t do it at all. Since we book everything from a quick Nairobi day safari to three-week circuits, I’ve seen every kind of arrival hiccup there is. Here’s what actually matters.

The eTA: Apply Before You Fly, Not At the Gate

Every visitor to Kenya (with a short list of East African Community exceptions) needs an eTA now, applied for online through the official government portal before departure. It is not the same as visa-on-arrival, which no longer exists for most nationalities. Apply at least a week before you fly. I’ve had guests apply the night before and get stuck in processing limbo at check-in in their home country.

  • Cost is around USD 34, paid online.
  • You need a passport valid 6+ months beyond your travel dates, a passport-style photo, and your accommodation details.
  • Processing is usually fast, often within 72 hours, but I always tell guests to build in a buffer.
  • Print or save the approval PDF. Airlines have turned people away at check-in for not having proof, even though the system is technically linked electronically.

Insider tip: use the correct government eTA site directly. There are third-party sites that charge double or triple the fee and look official. If a site asks for more than about USD 40, close the tab.

Landing at JKIA: What to Expect

Jomo Kenyatta International (JKIA) in Nairobi is where nearly all international guests land. Immigration has improved a lot in recent years with the eTA system, and most guests now clear in 20-30 minutes versus the old visa-on-arrival queues that could run over an hour. Have your eTA approval and passport ready, and know your first night’s accommodation address, since it sometimes gets asked at the counter.

After Immigration

  1. Collect luggage: carousels are clearly marked by flight number on screens above.
  2. Clear customs (usually a formality unless you’re bringing in commercial quantities of anything, or undeclared cash over the reporting threshold).
  3. Look for your driver in the arrivals hall holding a name board. If we’re handling your transfer, we track your flight and adjust the pickup time automatically for delays.

If your safari starts immediately, expect either a road transfer or, for guests flying straight into somewhere like Amboseli or the Mara, a domestic connection out of Wilson Airport, which is a separate facility about 25 minutes from JKIA. Don’t book a domestic flight departing less than 3 hours after your international arrival. I’ve had guests miss connections doing exactly that.

Common First-Timer Mistakes

  • Not applying for the eTA at all. Some guests assume Kenya still does visa-on-arrival because that’s what an old blog post told them. It does not, for almost all nationalities.
  • Booking flights that land in Nairobi late at night with no arranged pickup. JKIA at 11 p.m. is manageable but not where you want to be improvising ground transport.
  • Forgetting yellow fever documentation. If you’re arriving from (or have transited through) a yellow fever endemic country, you need proof of vaccination. Kenya checks this more strictly than most people expect.
  • Carrying too much cash in unfamiliar currency. USD is widely accepted for safari payments and park fees, but bring newer notes (2013 or later series); older bills get rejected at forex bureaus and sometimes by lodges.

Quick answers

Do I need the eTA if I’m just transiting through Nairobi? If you leave the airport, yes. If you stay airside for a connection, generally no, but check your specific routing.

How long does eTA approval take? Usually 24-72 hours, occasionally longer. Apply at least a week ahead to be safe.

Is Wilson Airport far from JKIA? About 25-30 minutes by road depending on traffic. Never book them back-to-back without a real buffer.

What if my eTA gets rejected? It happens occasionally over photo quality or passport scan issues. Reapply immediately and fix whatever was flagged; don’t wait until days before your flight to find out.
